Since 1998 Metro Rio has been operated by Opportrans – Concessão Metroviária S.A.
Rio de Janeiro has a very small metro network with only two lines (35 km). These lines cover the City Centre, the southern districts up to Copacabana and the northern districts up to Pavuna. The lines operate from around 6a to 11p and there are bus services connecting the stations to most areas in town.
Traveling in a metro is much quicker and safer way to visit all the city's principal tourist sites like the Maracanã stadium, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the Sugar Loaf mountain, Copacabana beach and many others. Rio Metro's fleet comprises 68 single- ended cab cars and 114 trailer cars. The metro stations are usually modern, bright type.

Police is stationed at the entrances to most of the stations to keep a check on any type of misbehavior. Tickets are purchased from a cashier in a booth.
