The history of the city is chronicled in the halls of The National Museum. This is an institution of education and research that shelters vast collections of Natural History and Anthropology. Besides, the biological and cultural diversity of the city is also showcased here.

All these scientific collections which are preserved serve as a primary source for studies and research. These further help the young enthusiasts to learn the past, their culture and the acts of bravery, cowardice and even some of the follies.

Located in Zona Norte in the Quinta da Boa Vista, this museum covers archaeological as well as botanical, zoological and ethnological subjects. The extensive collection is housed in an old, majestic Neoclassical building within 200 meters of the main park.

The museum collection includes works of painting and sculpture by Brazilian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including “The Cafe” by Candido Portinari and works by Emiliano de Cavalcanti and Tarsila do Amaral. There is a rare collection which includes coins, decorative arts, furniture and even African art.

Hours: 10a- 4p Tue- Sun.
