The Benedictine Monastery of Rio de Janeiro was built in response to the wishes of the city's early citizens in 1590 by monks from Bahia.

Located in the city centre, it was built in the early 17th century by Benedictine monks as a place for worship and study. Till date, people still find it to be a place of silence, peace, prayer and diverse activities directed by the monks.

The two principal activities of the monastery are the daily celebration of the Divine Office and the Eucharist with Gregorian chant.

This old monument has a rich heritage of the past. It has interesting history, colonial architecture and a richly decorated interior laid with gold and silver that range from wood carvings of the altar to the spiral columns. It also houses Saint Benedict College, Lumen Christi Editions, the Theological School of the Brazilian Benedictine Congregation, the Emmaus Retirement House, the Social Department and more.

Although the façade is simple yet it is pleasant. Every Sundays at 10a.m, a special celebration of a Gregorian chant mass is held.
