The Candelária Church was established in the XVIII century. The Candelária was known as church of the Fertile valley. Captain of merchant vessel Antonio Martins de Palma and his wife ordered the construction of the church.

This is one of the loveliest churches in Rio de Janeiro. It is really worth a visit. It rises tranquilly from the bustling financial center of Rio downtown, in the heart of an area rich in cultural attractions.

Its ground- plan is designed in the shape of a Latin cross; lined with marble. Its masonry facades features elaborate bronze doors, with its entire history painted on the walls. Also, the dome features impressive paintings by João Zeferino da Costa depicting the Christian virtues. It took almost ninety years of zealous effort to produce this remarkable landmark in the beautiful city of Rio. It was finally completed in 1898 and was Rio's largest church until the construction of the Cathedral.

Hours: 8a- 4p M- F, 8a- noon Sa- Su.
