This festival celebrates the anniversary of the city. The main event is a procession carrying the statue of St. Sebastian, the patron saint of Rio, from St. Sebastian church in Tijuca to the Metropolitan Cathedral where there is a festive Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro's cathedral, the Cathedral de São Sebastião, is like no other. Located in the heart of the city's financial district, it was designed by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca in a cone shape/pyramid.

The cathedral towers 96 meters high, the portal decorated in 48 low- relief bronze friezes with a theme of faith. Inside there are floor- to- ceiling windows on four cardinal points, allowing light to filter through the stained glass to create a mystical ambience.

Other events include horse racing and a samba show. This event takes place every 20th of January.

Admission is free.
