This annual event held at Copacabana Beach celebrates Iemanja, goddess of the sea and mother of the waters, according to the Umbanda religion of Brazil.

The beach attracts both New Year's revelers and those celebrating the joyful occasion for Iemanja, creating a large but friendly crowd. The first day of the year is marked by displays of local culture including costumes and dress, dance, art and food. The event is free.

In Rio de Janeiro, on December 31, throngs of people flock to the beaches to celebrate. Some of those people are there to celebrate the New Year some are there to celebrate the Festa de Iemanjá. Iemanjá is the Goddess of the Water, the mother of all the gods in the Umbanda religion of Brazil. She is offered flowers, gifts, perfume and rice which are set into little boats and cast adrift into the sea, or else tossed directly into the water.

Though a colorful element to the local scene the Bianas are not present merely to provide photo options for tourists. Acknowledged as accurate fortune tellers they are also respected for their ability to both cast and break debilitating curses.
