Museu do Índio opened on April 19th, 1953, in honor of the "Day of the Native." It houses a vast collection which contains the display of cooking utensils, tools, musical instruments, costumes and religious artifacts.
Photographs and displays enable the public to learn a little about Rio's original inhabitants. The museum has a store which offers craft items for sale. This museum, housed in an old colonial building, is a good place to learn a little about Rio's original inhabitants.
The Museum is functional due to the support of the Institute of the Historic site and Artistic National Ministry of the Culture in Brazil.
The public will be able to feast their eyes on photographs of the Xavante de Etéñitépa. The images cover a period of time of about six decades and have been produced at distinct times, for different authors, photographers, anthropologists and other researchers. This visual delight captivates visitors completely.
The Museum offers a special program for schools. The activities are differentiated in accordance with the age.
